Obituary for Sylvia H. Uber


Sylvia Harriet Uber (Bangsberg), a lifelong resident of West Salem, WI, passed away on July 12, 2024.

She was born to Earl and Adella Bangsberg on August 14, 1933. Sylvia graduated from West Salem High School in 1951 and went on to earn her Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) from Wisconsin State College-La Crosse, WI, in 1955. She married Ronald “Ron” James Uber on July 19, 1958, at Christ Ev. Lutheran Church, West Salem, WI.

Sylvia was an elementary teacher in Racine, WI, and later a dedicated substitute teacher in the West Salem area for many years. She also taught CPR and first aid classes at Western Technical College for over two decades, sharing her knowledge and skills with countless students. Sylvia and Ron founded The West Salem First Responders, playing a crucial role in its development and remaining actively involved for many years.

In addition to her professional achievements, Sylvia was an Avon sales representative for over 40 years. She volunteered for the Ladies Aid at Christ Ev. Lutheran Church in West Salem and was a leader for the Girl Pioneers. Sylvia was also an active member of several card clubs, enjoying games of 500 and Bridge with her friends in the community. In later years, Ron and Sylvia joined the Re Lax in Campers club from La Crosse and enjoyed traveling in their camper throughout the tristate area meeting many new camping friends.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Adella Bangsberg; her husband, Ron Uber; her brother, Ken Bangsberg; and her sister, Yvonne Andrews.

She is survived by her four children, Sheryl Uber (Ralph Schultz) of West Salem, Sandy (Jerry) Thomas of Plano Texas, Sue Uber (Wayne Shaker) of La Crosse, and Sheila Van Dyck and finance, (Gary Peat) of West Salem and Madison; four grandchildren, Shanna Cline (Troy Bergum) of Coon Valley, Jason (Sarah) Cline of Iola, Kenzie (Andrew) Koch of Cottage Grove, and Kyle Van Dyck of West Salem; three great-grandchildren, Jasmine, Madison, and Harper Cline, and brother-in-law, James Andrews, all will forever cherish her memory.

She will be deeply missed by her family, relatives, friends, and all who knew her, especially the family dogs and cats that always knew she was the best for a good scratch or cuddle.

A Christian Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m., on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, at Christ Ev. Lutheran Church, 500 Park St., West Salem. Rev. Don Frelitz will officiate. Burial will follow in Neshonoc Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service, Wednesday, at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her name to The West Salem First Responders, Christ Ev. Lutheran Church West Salem, The West Salem American Legion or the La Crosse Blue Stars Drum and Bugle Corps.

Sylvia’s warmth, dedication, and love touched the lives of many, and her legacy will live on in the hearts of those she leaves behind.
