Obituary for John E. Weymiller


John Edward Weymiller, 94, of Eitzen, MN., passed away Thursday, May 23, 2024, at Thornton Manor Care Center, Lansing, Iowa. John Edward Weymiller was born April 11, 1930, in a log house in Sand Cove, Allamakee County, Iowa, to Edward and Rosine (Fruechte) Weymiller. He attended a one room school for seven years and then completed eighth grade in New Albin, Iowa. After eighth grade, John quit school to help his father on the farm. In the Summer of 1944 (age 14), he drove a team of horses for threshing and silo filling. By the age of 15, he was a full-fledged tractor driver as well as accomplished at driving a five-horse team pulling a disc. At age 15, he was recognized on the Chicago radio market report for bringing a load of cattle by train to sell. John said he was never an "adolescent" because his teen years were filled with hard work. During those years, John did have a lot of fun too hunting coon and fox, swimming in the river, floating on innertubes, and playing on a softball team.

The family moved to Minnesota in 1950, to a farm in Wilmington Township, Houston County, Minnesota. In May of 1952, he married Elnora Brinker. John built their first house on the farm in Wilmington. It measured 18X20 feet. In 1953, John and Elnora became parents to Carolyn Marie. In 1956, they moved to Eitzen and started a repair shop. Also in September of that same year, they were blessed with twin girls, Alice and Audrey. John and Elnora enjoyed 68 years together; they created many happy memories including family camping vacations. John and Elnora continued to do a lot of traveling which included many bus trips.

John finished his high school education and received his diploma by completing correspondence courses. He then attended the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse majoring in Biology with a minor in Chemistry. He then attended Viterbo University majoring in Nursing. John also did post graduate work earning a Masters Degree and finally a PhD. He was a board certified Advanced Practice Nurse. John always felt this was his true calling in life and he practiced for 40 years. John was also a Certified Department of Transportation Examiner still doing truck driver physicals at the age of 90.

John was an avid gardener, always tending a large garden with beautiful results that he shared with many. In retirement, he continued to fix old tractors, antique gas engines, and rebuild Model T Magnetos. One of his prize possessions was the Model T he built. John and Elnora enjoyed many miles in the Model T.

John served on the Eitzen Fire Department for over 50 years. He was a 3rd Degree Master Mason, past church council member, Eitzen Lion, and unsung hero.

In the fall of 2020, John and Elnora moved from their home in Eitzen to an extended care facility. Elnora preceded John in death on February 28, 2021. John continued to reside there until his death.

Survivors include his three daughters, Carolyn Moenck, Alice (Dale) Roberts, and Audrey (Michael McMullin) Weymiller; four grandchildren, Angela (Matt) Palen, Tim (Jackie) Moenck, Jennifer Ofelt, and Jody (Bill) Horstman; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Betty Decker.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Elnora; two sisters, Rose (Harold) Wintz and Helen Weymiller; son-in-law, Thomas Moenck; and brother-in-law, George Decker.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m., Sunday, June 2, 2024, at St. Luke's Church, Eitzen, Minn. Pastor Michael McCann will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Luke's North Cemetery. A visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service. Online condolences may be offered on this website.
