Obituary for Ronald "Ron" L. Hammond

Ronald “Ron” L. Hammond of La Crosse passed away on Monday, May 31, 2021, at his home due to cancer. He was born on July 8, 1939 to Cecil and Iva Lea (Worman) Hammond in the town of Genoa, Vernon County and attended high school in De Soto, WI graduating in 1957. In July 1957 Ron started working hauling milk and making cheese at Retreat Cheese Factory and worked there for three and a half years. On March 30, 1960 he entered the U.S. Army for three years being honorably discharged on March 29, 1963. While in service, Ron married Judy Ross October 9, 1962. They were married for almost 42 years until her death on August 25, 2004. Ron worked in several factory jobs which he enjoyed. In 1972 he and Judy moved their family to take over and later purchased the family farm in Retreat, rural De Soto, WI, leaving the farm in 1985 due to some health problems. Ron ended his 40 hour per week job retiring from Northern Engravings in Lansing, Iowa on July 6, 2001. On July 9, 2001 Ron went to work part time for Kraus-Anderson Reality at Shelby Mall in La Crosse, WI working until June 30, 2018 when he fully retired. Ron enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing slow pitch softball which he played until he was 50. Then he picked up golf at age 59 and enjoyed playing with family and friends. He loved to dance at the Avalon and Concordia Ballroom, where he was the bar manager and was on the board of directors. On April 12, 2008 Ron married Sandra “Sandy” Comeau Larson in La Crescent, MN. The lived in La Crosse, WI. Ron is survived by his wife, Sandy; sister, Marla Withey, of La Crosse, WI, adopted sister, Carol (Deldon) Hanson, De Soto, WI, four sons; Jon of La Crosse, WI, Frank (Sheri) of Viroqua, WI, Ron C. (Lisa) of La Crosse, WI and Corey Hammond of Prairie du Chien, WI; daughter, Abby (Lane) Jacobs of McGregor, IA, seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, three brothers-in-law, Louis (Angie), Allen and Bill Ross, all of La Crosse, WI; step-son, Erin (Jane) Comeau of Onalaska, WI and four step-grandchildren, and a step-great-grandson and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Ron was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Judy Ross Hammond; brother-in-law, Kevin Withey; grandson, Skyler Hammond, and step-children Kevin Comeau, and Kristy Comeau Tracy. A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Monday, June 7, 2021 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church (21 N. Hill St, La Crescent, MN). Pastor Mike Woods will officiate. A visitation will be held from 4 pm until 7 pm on Sunday, June 6, 2021 at the Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, Woodruff Chapel, La Crosse (4239 Mormon Coulee Rd.) and from 10 am until the time of service at the church. Military honors will be rendered following the service at the church by the Gittens-Leidel American Legion Post 595 of La Crescent and the United States Army Funeral Honor Guard. Burial will be held at a later date. The family would like to thank the Gundersen staff of the Oncology, Radiology, and Hospice for their compassion and excellent care.
