Obituary for Betty "Jean" Troyanek


Betty “Jean” Troyanek, 90, of La Crosse, died at her home with her family by her side on Thursday July 23, 2020. She was born April 06, 1930 to Louis and Grace Podawitz on the family farm in Genoa, WI. She attended Lansing HS, Lansing, IA, until a barge took out the bridge and the buses were no longer able to cross the river. She then went to Central HS from which she graduated. She married Herman “Butch” Troyanek June 11, 1949 who preceded her in death on March 2, 2018. Jean worked for Trane Company for many years while raising a family. She also worked for Lutheran Hospital as one of the first computer operators. She and her husband, Butch, opened South Lanes Pizza, where she was known for making the best pizzas and spaghetti and meatballs. Jean was a member and an officer of the Women of the Moose for many years and received the Award of Distinction in 2015. Jean was also active with the ALS Association and helped to start the La Crosse Area ALS Support Group. She loved watching sports, especially the Brewers. She enjoyed mosaic and stained-glass art, creating several pieces for family members. Jean is survived by her children Gary (Connie) of La Crosse, Nancy (Tony) Greenlee of Eau Claire, Wis., and Jeff (Cindy) of New Munster, Wis., daughters in law, Bea Klinger (wife of the late David Troyanek) of Windsor, Colo.; Jo Troyanek (wife of the late Paul Troyanek) of La Crosse, and son in law Bill Stangl (husband of the late Geri Stangl) of Eau Claire Wis.; grandchildren Matt (Ruth) Troyanek, Lisa (Morgan) Osantowski, Mike Stangl, Bryan (Julie) Stangl, Joe (Michelle) Stangl, Angie Schilling, Kaydee (Per) Lee, Alee Troyanek, Tiffany (LaMont) Goins, Melissa Troyanek, Christopher Troyanek, Jacqui (Trent) Olson, Steve Troyanek, Christina (Andy) Jankowski, and Andrew Troyanek; 28 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sons, David and Paul; daughter, Geri Stangl; grandson Nick Troyanek; granddaughter Jeanne Rud; and brother Rodney Podawitz. A private family service will be held at Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, Woodruff Chapel, La Crosse. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
